Understanding FGM
The Harmful Practice of FGM in Maasai Culture
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice among the Maasai community, seen as a rite of passage for girls transitioning into adulthood. Despite being outlawed, strong cultural beliefs perpetuate its practice. FGM is believed to ensure marital fidelity and prevent curses that could lead to death during childbirth. However, the practice has severe physical and psychological consequences, including infections, increased risk of HIV, and complications during childbirth. Our organization is dedicated to educating the community, advocating for alternative rites of passage, and supporting girls who resist this harmful tradition.
Impact of FGM on Health
Age
70% of Maasai girls undergo FGM between ages 12-14.
Childbirth Complications
50% increase in childbirth complications among women who have undergone FGM.
Infections
30% higher risk of HIV transmission due to FGM-related infections.
Trauma
80% of women experience severe pain and psychological trauma post-FGM.
Health Issues
60% of FGM survivors suffer from long-term reproductive health issues.
Mortality Rates
FGM leads to a 40% higher rate of maternal and infant mortality during childbirth.
Innovative Approaches to End FGM
Our Efforts in Advocating Against FGM
The Maasai Transformation Organization (MATRO) is dedicated to eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) through a multifaceted approach. We employ innovative methods to demystify this harmful practice, including the promotion of alternative rites of passage that honor cultural traditions without the cut. Our anti-FGM campaigns are designed to educate and empower communities, highlighting the severe health risks and human rights violations associated with FGM.
We organize education and training workshops that provide vital information and support to girls and their families. These workshops are crucial in changing mindsets and fostering a community-wide commitment to ending FGM. Additionally, MATRO collaborates closely with law enforcers and local administrators to ensure the protection of girls at risk and to take legal action against perpetrators. By presenting certificates during alternative rites of passage graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the transition from childhood to adulthood in a safe and dignified manner.
