A Call to Restore Our Environment
Environment & Climate Change
Global warming and climate change have trickling effects in all parts of the world. The impact of climate change has adversely affected agriculture and food security thereby contributing to increased poverty, conflicts and underdevelopment. In a community living in arid and semi-arid areas with scarcity of water, forests and basic infrastructure like the Maasai, their livelihood are negatively affected by rapid environmental degradation. This is an onset of disasters and when immediate action to protect environment is not addressed then the resources to cater for the community livelihood and its animals may be diminished over time.
It is our conviction that the responsibility to protect the environment and address the challenges posed by climate change majorly rests with the community. The community has a pivotal role to reclaim their environment from the damages caused by human actions as well as climate change. It is therefore our intention to establish programs which restore pasture lands and farmlands. We sensitize community members on the importance of planting trees as a way of protecting environment for sustainable development.
We support and mobilize them to form Community Environmental Clubs and Groups to establish projects such as tree planting and restoration projects, tackling soil erosion as a way of reversing desertification and environmental degradation. This restoration will make them utilize most of their lands for productivity and livelihood. We also discourage deforestation for firewood and charcoal burning by encouraging them to use solar energy and fuel-efficient cooking stoves and request for the well wishers to support them with the provision of the cooking stoves and solar panels which are very effective in arid and semi-arid areas.
