Empowering Maasai Women and Girls
Challenging Cultural Norms for a Brighter Future
Join us in our mission to transform the lives of Maasai women and girls by advocating for their rights and providing them with opportunities for education and economic empowerment.
The Impact of Patriarchy on the Maasai Community
The Maasai community’s patriarchal system has significantly marginalized women and girls, subjecting them to gender-based violence and limiting their access to education and economic opportunities. Practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), early forced marriages, and wife inheritance perpetuate these injustices, leaving women vulnerable and excluded from community wealth and decision-making processes.
Widows, divorced women, and single mothers face severe economic exclusion as the community’s wealth and inheritance are controlled by men. This exclusion leads to increased poverty and vulnerability among these groups. Additionally, the nomadic lifestyle of the Maasai further hinders boys’ and girls’ access to formal education, as boys are tasked with herding livestock and girls with household chores and constructing homesteads.
Our organization believes that no gender should be left behind in the quest for sustainable peace and development. Empowering women and girls through education and advocacy is crucial to challenging discriminatory cultural practices and policies. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society for all members of the Maasai community.
