Empowering Maasai Communities
Transforming Lives Through Peace and Justice
Join us in our mission to foster sustainable development and human rights for the Maasai community.
Overcoming Poverty and Conflict
The international phenomena on peace and conflict have clearly demonstrated that any community living in poverty and exclusion is at the verge of protracted conflict and human rights violation. At the same time community conflicts is fuelled by corruption which emanates from either scarcity of resources due to greed of some community members or corruption by their own governments, especially when they use discriminative ways of providing essential services to the people at grassroots levels. As a pastoralist community fighting over scarce resources of pastures and water, the Maasai have engaged in inter-community and tribal wars which have adversely affected community peace.
Our Key Focus Areas

MATRO believes that true transformation can only be realized when a community has true peace, respect human rights as well as empowered to hold their leaders accountable. For individuals to live secure lives, communities need peace, justice and reconciliation, civic empowerment and good governance, and right-based economic development. Our transformative approach towards this therefore entails sensitizing, training and educating communities to resolve their own conflicts, build capacities to heal broken relationships and nourish justice and peace.
Civic Empowerment
Through our social accountability approach, we envision for a just and democratic governance at community levels by mobilizing, facilitating, equipping and amplifying for community’s voice and action to realize the rights of the indigenous people to hold their county and national leaders accountable for their access to basic public services like education, primary healthcare, water and other essential infrastructure. Social accountability in governance process is of paramount importance in ensuring community’s rights of development and democratic governance. It strengthens the capacity of community leaders to participate in county and national planning, budgeting and other governance processes. For example we mobilize them to demand the integration of Community Led Participatory Change Plans in the County Integrated Development Plans or to participate in social audits to demand access to information for the realization of human rights.
